All Solid Spruce Top, Ziricote Super Tenor Ukulele, with Case (UC-B)

To the untrained eye, the Kala Tenor XL ukulele might look like a standard tenor ukulele.
Aside from it being a solid wood ukulele and generally very well-built, it might also seem like a rather ordinary ukulele.

But if you look closer, you'll notice it's larger and the scale length is a bit longer than a regular tenor.
A tenor has a scale length of 17". That precise scale length is the definition of a tenor ukulele.
But here, you have a scale length of just over 18". The scale length of a baritone is 19".
This mix is a bit reminiscent of a soprano longneck, a soprano with a neck and scale length like a concert.
A large tenor or a small baritone?
The question almost becomes philosophical.

So, what can you use a Tenor XL for?
The neck is a bit longer than a regular tenor and a bit wider. More space for your fingers, that might be an argument for many.
Be creative with tunings.
You can tune it like a baritone ukulele, in G. But the shorter scale opens up some possibilities.
Tune it in A, i.e., one step higher than a baritone.
Or another half step up - Then you're in the same tuning as many brass players.
Or tune it in C, but with a low G - Now you have a ukulele where the low G string truly shines.

Or tune it like a completely normal tenor (high G) and you have a ukulele with an extra rich tone and good sustain.
